Singapore's retail sales up 4.8 pct in July

SINGAPORE, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's retail sales rose 4.8 percent year-on-year in July, accelerating from June's 2.4 percent increase, according to official statistics on Friday.

Retail sales grew 4.1 percent from June. Total retail sales in July were estimated at 4.2 billion Singapore dollars, with online sales accounting for 13.1 percent.

Most retail industries saw year-on-year growth in July, led by computer and telecommunications equipment, which surged 11.1 percent. By contrast, petrol service stations and retailers of apparel and footwear experienced declines.

Meanwhile, retail sales in food and beverage services rose 1.7 percent, bouncing back from flat growth in June. The sector's total sales were estimated at 1 billion Singapore dollars, with online purchases making up 25.9 percent. (1 Singapore dollar equals 0.78 U.S. dollars)
