SINGAPORE, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Male citizens driving cars were "disproportionately represented" among speeding offenders in 2024, according to a Singaporean official.
In response to a parliamentary question about the profiles of speeding motorists, Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim said commonly cited excuses included a lack of awareness of the speed limit or the speed at which the motorist was traveling, as well as urgency to reach appointments.
Singapore recorded 192,000 speeding violations in 2024, the highest in a decade.
Drink-driving remained a major concern for traffic police. To address this, penalties were increased in 2019, with mandatory imprisonment and license disqualification for dangerous and careless driving offenses committed under the influence of alcohol, he said.
