45 killed in Iraq bombings blamed on Al Qaeda
BAGHDAD - At least 45 people were killed and about 200 injured in a series of bombings across Iraq Tuesday, the ninth anniversary of the US invasion of the country.
The bombings, blamed on the Al Qaeda, also came ahead of an Arab League summit.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts that took place in Baghdad, Kirkuk, Karbala, Hilla, Tikrit, Baiji, Ramadi and Falluja. According to Reuters, there were 26 bombings.
In the predominantly Shia city of Karbala, two car bombs went off killing at least 13 people while in Kirkuk, a car bomb killed another 13, police said.
In central Falluja, a bomb planted around a house belonging to a police officer claimed the life of a pregnant woman and her 6-year-old child.
In Baghdad, two separate car bomb attacks, including one opposite the foreign ministry building, killed seven people.
The UN secretary-general's special envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, has called the bombings "atrocious".
Tuesday's bombings are the worst since Feb 23, when around 44 people were killed and more than 200 wounded in a string of attacks.
Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told Reuters: "The goal of today's attacks was to present a negative image of the security situation in Iraq."
The March 27-29 Arab League summit marks the country's return to the regional stage following the withdrawal of US troops in December.
Parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, describing the bombings as "brutal, criminal", said they were part of efforts by Al Qaeda to "derail the Arab summit, and keep Iraq feeling the effects of violence and destruction".
